Letter to the Commissioners from Faye E. Miller
Ashtabula County Covered Bridge with height restriction
A covered bridge in Ashtabula County has achieved a solution to the problem, preventing the possibility of oversize trucks from crossing and damaging the historic structure. This would be a most effective solution, especially given the proximity of other bridges and roadways on nearby streets which render the need for a heavier bridge on Stonelick Williams Corner moot.
Here at this link you can find the Clermont County Engineer’s plans for rehabing of our landmark. In effect, they will be completely removing the bridge’s ability to support it’s own weight under the guise of updating it for 21st century traffic. They propose to completely remove the floor and build a new modern bridge inside the old one. The proposed new bridge is to be two giant arches made of glue laminated lumber with galvanized steel rods supporting a composite floor. This new bridge would obscure the old trusses and render them useless. We want the bridge to stay the way it was designed, only replacing the worn parts with authentic materials.
